Fall Festivals and Riviera Maya Travel This Autumn

There’s no denying the beauty of summer in this part of the world. Perhaps that’s why we welcome so many visitors during the warmest months. Even so, there’s something to be said for autumn in Mexico, and the unique charms of the season simply must be experienced — especially the transcendent Día de Muertos celebrations. So if you’re looking for a getaway that’s certain to bring a smile to your face, here are some of the reasons you may want to look at Riviera Maya travel this fall.

Día de Muertos

The Mexican Día de Muertos (“Day of the Dead”) is often compared to Halloween elsewhere, but the tone is very different. Also referred to as Hanal Pixán among the Mayan peoples, this treasured spiritual festival is marked by colorful displays, parades, traditional costumes, and gatherings filled with incredible food and music — all in honor and memory of departed loved ones. Don’t miss Mahekal’s Celebration on November 1st and 2nd — our guests are more than welcome to join us in enjoying this treasured cultural celebration.

Fall Events and Festivals

Autumn is also a particularly active time for festivals and holiday happenings in Playa del Carmen and the wider Riviera Maya in general. Xcaret — the region’s cultural theme park — will be holding their annual Vida y Muerte Festival once again in 2022. Music lovers can look forward to attending the Riviera Maya Jazz Festival in November. The Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe is also a national holiday across Mexico, complete with parades, celebrations and feasts. And of course, Christmas and New Year’s in Mexico are always incredibly festive occasions. Mahekal will be celebrating these holidays with our guests!

Cooler Days

Summer warmth is a big part of the appeal of the region. Many visitors specifically seek out Riviera Maya getaways for the sun and sand during peak season. But we’ll let you in on a little secret: autumns here feel like summer elsewhere. Thanks to peak day temperatures of around 86°F (30°C) and mild evenings that bottom out at about 70°F (21°C) in the fall, many travelers prefer to visit during the months when the temperatures roll off a bit. If you’re one of them, then you know where to find us!

Longer Nights

Speaking of evenings, fall is the ideal time to drop in and see us if you’re a bit of a night owl. As the mercury starts to dip ever so slightly in the fall (and the equinox passes in mid-September), sunsets also start happening just a bit earlier every day. Interested in sipping a frosty beverage on a beach lounger during some of the longest, mildest, most laid-back nights anywhere? Then there’s simply no better place to do so than right here. Once you’ve sat under a palm tree with your toes in the sand watching the moon reflect on the water, you’ll know what we mean.

A Slower Pace

It’s no secret that life can be relaxed here in Mexico. Still, with the heaviest travel season being in summer, sometimes there are longer waits for tables, longer lines at attractions, and larger crowds in general. Therefore, many travelers opt to plan their visit in seasons when things are a bit more sedate. So, if you’re looking for a bit more time and space to unwind, then it may be a good idea to consider a trip to Playa del Carmen in the fall.

More Budget-Friendly

The slower pace and lighter travel of the fall months also carry another benefit. Since summer and winter tend to be the peak travel seasons in this region of the world, it can simply be a more economical choice to travel during a less-busy season. A look at everything from round-trip airfare rates to retail prices on Playa del Carmen’s famous Fifth Avenue shopping thoroughfare often indicates an undeniable truth — lower traffic also means lower prices on many of the souvenirs, travel costs and attractions here.
