Dive Center at Mahekal Beach Resort

Snorkeling, Diving, Fishing and Swim with the Whale Sharks

Snorkeling is relaxing, great fun and one of the main adventures you should consider during your visit to the Riviera Maya.  Our Dive Center offers several snorkel trips with varying times.  All Snorkeling gear is included.

Consider a 1.5-hour duration snorkel trip to a beautiful reef; This tour is slow paced, so you can enjoy the beautiful marine creatures like rays, seahorses, lobsters, sea stars and maybe a turtle or two.  We pick the best reefs for you that day, based on visibility and weather conditions.

To really explore Riviera Maya underwater, consider a 1/2-day tour.  We start at "Turtle Bay", where they are dozens of wild, free turtles.  The reef protects them from larger predators, and they have plenty of sea grass to eat.  From here, the tour heads to a freshwater Cenote.  Cenotes are natural clear freshwater holes in the middle of the Mayan jungle.  You see rock formations that were millions of years in the making and even sea fossils. An added bonus is seeing jungle animals like spider monkeys and deer in the surrounding jungle.

For a full day adventure, consider snorkeling Cozumel.  Your trip includes a ferry ride, and then snorkel a reef of great marine animal diversity, including some endangered species such as the Cozumel Splendid Toadfish.  This tour also includes and ocean view lunch.

Snorkeling with the Whale Sharks is seasonal from May to September.

Whale sharks have very large mouths and are filter feeders and feed almost exclusively on plankton and small fishes and pose no threat to humans. The average adult is 9.8 meters or 32 feet in length.  Whale sharks swim slowly and are curious.

Swimming is done in groups of two people, accompanied by a certified guide at all times.

Experienced or beginner divers will enjoy the great dive spots in Riviera Maya.  Our dive trips include Cenote dives and Cozumel's spectacular reef. Our Salt & Fresh package for 2 days includes 2 tank dives in the Cenotes, and 2 tank dives in Cozumel.  (Equipment is extra.)

Learn to scuba dive and get your certification in this amazing destination.  Our instructors have multi-agency certifications (NAUI, SSI, and PADI).  We offer quality dive equipment; and convenient classrooms and pools for the theory and practical portions of the courses.  Courses range from Beginner, to Open Water Certification, to Advanced Open Water and even Rescue Diver courses.

Or, if you've already done your part -studying dive theory and mastering confined water skills in your home country; now come to Mexico for the Open Water Referral Course to complete your Open Water Diver certification in the warm turquoise waters of the Mexican Caribbean. Playa del Carmen has perfect dive spots for training dives – shallow reefs with light current and lots of marine life to see while you make your first ocean dives.

Technical dives are defined as dives deeper than 130 feet/40 meters with no direct access to the surface or natural light, and can include fresh and saltwater caves, and the interiors of shipwrecks.  In many cases, technical diving also includes a planned decompression over numerous depths as part of controlled ascent to the surface.  Please contact us for more information and pricing on technical dives.

We offer 4- and 6- hour fishing trips in a 46ft Fisherman Pro Boat; the Santa Barbara.

Fishing is exceptionally good along the Riviera Maya, as the water flow between the island of Cozumel and the mainland creates the perfect habitat for a variety of marine life. Barracuda, Wahoo, and Kingfish can be caught throughout the year. The best months for other fish are:

Bonito and Tuna - January-April, July-December

Amberjack - January-March, October-December

Dorado, Sailfish, and Marlin - May-June (Sailfish and marlin are catch and release)

The Mexican Caribbean is the perfect place to enjoy a variety of aquatic sports. When you're ready to get off the beach and into the water, our dive center offers paddleboards (SUPs), kayaks, tubes and snorkel gear; included in your Resort Fee.
